Louisiana Breweries History: Dixie Brewing Company
Dixie is a microbrewery, not a brewpub, so you have to look for their beers in local pubs and supermarkets. Dixie Original opened in 1907 as an ordinary regional brewery, but have survived by microbrewery and brewing craft type beers. They sell a lager but they are best know for their Blackened Voodoo, a malty dark lager, and Crimson Voodoo, a reddish beer. Dixie also have an interesting beer called White Moose, which is usually only found in small bottles. It is a chocolate dessert beer. The orriginal Dixie brewery was a regional brewery that was in business for 76 years before being sold to the Coy International Corporation in 1983. Brewing of Coy brands was to be moved to the Dixie brewery. The Dixie brewery however was struggling with large financial problems and losing market share. There had been a brewing problem for awhile and most of Dixie's customers left Dixie for other beers because of the poor quality of the beer. Coy International Corporation closed on 12/31/84. |
